On September 9, 2025, Associate Professor Peng Zhang was invited to deliver an academic report titled "Mind Control and Functional Recovery: The Medical Frontier of Brain-Computer Interfaces" at 1819 conference room of M Building. The report was hosted by Prof. Daiqin Chen.

Assoc. Prof. Zhang introduced his pioneering work on implantable brain–computer interfaces (BCI) and medical artificial intelligence. His team established one of the earliest nonhuman primate BCI platforms in China, achieving breakthroughs across the full technical chain—from behavioral paradigms and neural microelectrode implantation to neural signal decoding and real-time robotic arm control. More recently, his group developed an “implantable brain–peripheral nerve interface” system, enabling restoration of motor function in paralyzed limbs through peripheral nerve stimulation.

The lecture highlighted recent progress in decoding motor intention from brain signals with machine learning, and its application to functional reconstruction. Assoc. Prof. Zhang also presented advances in medical AI, including atrial fibrillation risk prediction from ECG and protein phase separation prediction from amino acid sequences.

With clear explanations and inspiring results, Assoc. Prof. Zhang engaged in active discussions with faculty and students, leaving a strong impression on the audience.
