On January 15, at the 2021 annual work conference of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the person of the 2020 year and the group of the 2020 year lists in the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Xin Zhou in Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology was selected as the "Chinese Academy of Sciences Innovative Person of the 2020 Year".

Aiming at the technical blind spots of lung imaging detection methods, after 10 years of hard work, Xin Zhou led the group developed the human lung gas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instrument with the highest enhancement ratio in the world and the independent intellectual property rights, and successfully "light up" the blind area of the human lungs. The team broke through a series of technical problems such as low lung gas MRI signal, inability to perform real-time imaging, and clinically only proton (1H) imaging. This increased the gas magnetic resonance signal by 86,000 times, making China achieve the leap from scratch of the high-resolution lung gas MRI. In addition, the team used adaptive undersampling, compressed sensing, deep learning and other technologies to increase the sampling rate by 5 frames per second. The self-developed automatic frequency up-down multi-core radio frequency device realized multi-element imaging and can be equipped with current clinical MRI. This achievement was listed as the only typical case of "demand traction, breakthrough bottleneck" by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2020.

Faced with the COVID-19 epidemic, Xin Zhou volunteered to lead his team to the front line of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital and Tongji Hospital to fight the epidemic, using this equipment to carry out accurate and visual assessment of the lung ventilation and blood exchange function of patients with the COVID-19 for the first time in the world. A comprehensive assessment of the microstructure and function of the lungs of more than 1,000 patients with the COVID-19 has provided new data support for the treatment evaluation and prognosis evaluation, and provided scientific and technological support for winning the battle against epidemic prevention and control.

Xin Zhou is rigorous, humble, and innovative. In recent years, he has obtained more than 60 domestic and foreign invention patents, published more than 100 papers in international academic journals such as "Science Advances", and won the honors such as the "National Innovation Award", "Top ten national scientific and technological innovation people", "Scientific Exploration Award", and the Chinese Academy of Sciences "Young Scientist Award".
