Professor Omar M. Yaghi of UC Berkeley visit WIPM
On December 7, 2017, Professor Omar M. Yaghi of UC Berkeley visited Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences at the invitation of Professor Xin Zhou, and gave an academic report entitled " MOF / COF Materials on demand coming-fage". in the 28th Tianjuan Spectrum Forum.
Professor Omar M. Yaghi, born in 1965, a Jordanian-born American inorganic chemist, a material chemist, a supramolecular chemist, and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990, then went to Harvard University to work as a postdoctoral fellow. He was an associate professor at Arizona State University in 1992, a professor at the University of Michigan in 1999, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2006, Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Prof. Omar M. Yaghi contributed pioneering work in the field of metal-organic frameworks and started the research craze of the metal-organic framework. He is one of the most cited scientists in the world today. He won Solid State Chemistry Award (1998), Sacconi Medal (2004), the Materials Research Society Medal (2007), Newcomb says Prize (2007), American Chemical Society Chemistry of Materials Award (2009), King Faisal International Prize (2015), Mustafa Prize (15) 20, TUBA Academy Prize (16) 20, Spiers Memorial Award (2017), Albert Einstein World Award of Science (2017), and other awards.
In this report, Professor Omar M. Yaghi introduced the discovery of porous crystals and their development. From the organometallic framework and the molecular organic framework to the zeolitic imidazolate skeleton structure material, Prof. Yaghi demonstrated their molecular structure and molecular composition in combination with animated images. Through vivid examples, the characteristics of all kinds of crystals are explained in a humorous and humorous way. When introducing the application status and future prospects of these crystalline materials, Professor Yaghi led the students into a wonderful micro-world. Professor Yaghi also demonstrated the applications of metal-organic frameworks and other compounds in the fields of clean energy, water resources regulation, food and health. He pointed out that porous crystalline material is one of the most promising research areas of the moment, and the material is changing the world. He also encourages students to be creative in their research work, not to be limited by their thinking and to challenge and explore.
After the report, Professor Omar M. Yaghi held full exchange of ideas with the teachers and students present. The academic atmosphere of the conference site was lively.
