In November 30, 2016, Professor Gaolin Liang from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) visited Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences at the invitation of Professor Xin Zhou. Professor Liang gave us a good report named "Intracellular   Self-Assembly and Disassembly of Nanoparticles applied for Molecular and Cellular Imaging " .

Professor Gaolin Liang received his B.S. degree from Nanjing University in 1993. He got his M.S. degree from Zhengzhou University in 2002 and Ph.D. degree from Fudan University in 2005. From 2005 to 2008, he conducted his postdoctoral research work in chemistry department of  Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He was postdoctoral fellow of School of Medicine in Stanford University from 2008 to 2010. In 2010 He joined USTC as a professor of department of chemistry. Professor Gaolin Liang has published many papers in top journals such as Nature Chemistry.

During the report, Professor Liang reviewed the development of novel nanoprobes used for intracellular biological imaging. He further introduced a condensation reaction between 2-cyanobenzothiazole (CBT) and D-cysteine (D-Cys) in fireflies. Making use of this kind of click condensation reaction, Professor Liang developed “smart” nanoprobes that can self-assembly and disassembly inside the cell for biological applications by MR imaging, nuclear imaging and optical imaging. At last, Professor Liang also described the pressing challenges of this kind of “smart” self-assembly nanoparticles.

Professor Maili Liu, Xin Zhou and other teachers and students participated in this report. There was an active discussion between them and Professor Liang at the end of the report.
