In January 18th, 2016, invited by professor Xin Zhou of Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM), professor Dong Liang of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) came to WIPM for an academic visit. During the visit, he made a report entitled "The rapid MRI based on sparse sampling" on the 10th session of Tianjuan spectral Youth Forum.

Professor Dong Liang is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, which is an authoritative journal in medical imaging area. Besides, he is an executive deputy director of National Union of "high-end medical imaging technology and equipment" Engineering Laboratory. He also serves as the National Natural Science Foundation of China's communication reviewer and the reviewer of more than 10 international well-known journals. At present, he is mainly engaged in the sparse sampling theory and rapid MRI technology research. So far, he has published more than 60 papers on Reson. Med. Magn., Magn. Reson. J., T. Med. Imaging IEEE, T. Image Process. IEEE and other journals.

During the report, professor Liang briefly introduced the conventional MRI technology and pointed out its shortage in sampling speed compared with other imaging modalities. Then he introduced the theory of Compressed Sensing (CS), a novel technology, which can recover original signal from undersampled data far less than Nyquist sampling condition. Professor Liang showed us the origin of CS, three required conditions (sparsity, non-coherence, nonlinear reconstruction algorithm), and current situation of MRI based on CS in sequence, leading us to learn step by step in the field of CS. At last, professor Liang showed us the achievements made by his group in this field, such as MRI based on non Fourier encoding, combination between CS and parallel imaging in MRI, CS framework based on detail optimization, etc.

The wonderful report given by professor Liang attracted a lot of teachers and students of WIPM. Academician Chaohui Ye and professor Xin Zhou were invited to the report and launched a heated discussion on potential cooperation. The report stimulated a keen interest in all students, some from which discussed with professor Liang. The report has achieved a good result.

After the report, professor Liang visited the laboratory. He conducted a more in-depth communication with teachers and students of the Institute, and expressed a desire to strengthen the cooperation with WIPM.
