On December 7th,Dr. Qian chunqi from NIH, invited by Prof. Zhou Xin, visited  Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM, CAS) and delivered a lecture entitled "The development and the application of Wireless amplified in in-vivo high-resolution imaging".

Limited detection sensitivity is the main disadvantage of MRI, an very important technique widely used in disease diagnosis and biomedical research. Dr. Qian has developed a new technology, namely Wireless amplified, to improve the detection sensitivity of MRI. The basic idea of this new method is similar as the carrier transmission.  A micro antenna is set close to sample of interest to accept the weak RF signal of MRI. Simultaneously, a carrier wave with much higher frequency than MRI signal is inputted into the antenna through wireless and modulated by the MRI signal. The modulated carrier wave transmits to another receiver through wireless and demodulated before amplification. Because the micro antenna can be put very close to the sample or inside the body in in-vivo experiment, it shows a much higher sensitivity compared with conventional MRI receiver system.

Dr. Qian chunqi obtained his Bachelor's degree from Nanjing University in 2002, and his PhD in the University of California at Berkeleyy in 2007. After that, he carried out postdoctoral research in National high field laboratory in 2009. Dr. Qian is a research assistant at National Institutes of Health, where he engaged in new MRI technologies. He had done outstanding jobs on magnetic resonance probe, high magnetic field imaging coil, wireless amplifier. Dr. Qian's work has been published in journals such as Radiology and Journal of Magnetic Resonance. In 2009 International magnetic resonance association ampere association recognized Dr. Qian as Young professor award.
